This week, we’re stepping out of the treehouse and into the field for an up-close look at one of Gippsland’s most fascinating creatures—the Giant Gippsland Earthworm. We asked Alison Oates and Dave Sutton from the Threatened Species Action Group come if they would like to join us in the tree-house and Alison suggested we go for a walk and visit the worms on Dave’s stunning property in Arawata, just north of Leongatha.
Together, we explored the habitat of these remarkable earthworms, learned about their unique role in South Gippsland’s ecosystem, and even recorded some great gurgles! Alison and Dave shared insights into their Great Gippsland Earthworm Project, highlighting efforts to understand and protect these iconic but little-known creatures.
Alison is a landscape ecologist who has worked extensively in Gippsland on a wide range of flora projects for the Government, NGOs and volunteer conservation groups.
She is a foundation member of the Gippsland Threatened Species Action Group and is passionate about improving habitat for threatened species and creating landscape-scale biolinks across Gippsland.
Dave, a long-time conservationist with a rich history of projects through the South Gippsland Conservation Society and the West Gippsland CMA, welcomed us to his beautiful property in Arawata, just north of Leongatha. Over the past 25 years, Dave has transformed this landscape through careful re-vegetation, creating the perfect setting to learn more about these extraordinary creatures.
Thank you Alison and Dave for sharing your passion and story with us...and delicious cakes!
